Smoking
Introduction
Smoking is known to be the principle avoidable cause of premature deaths in the UK.
Smoking is associated with more than 50 different diseases and disorders – many fatal.
All forms of tobacco use are associated with higher overall death rates.
One in two long-term smokers will die prematurely as a result of smoking – half of these in middle age.

Underwriting Considerations
Smoker rates are applied to anyone who has used any tobacco products within the last 12 months. This includes nicotine replacements, cigars and pipe tobacco.
Smoking is regarded as an additional risk factor when underwriting any associated conditions; in particular those detailed previously, and will usually result in a higher extra premium being charged or even declinature.
A simple saliva medical test which checks for the presence of cotinine may be required to check the validity of the answer to the question on the application form. Cotinine is a chemical that is made by the body from nicotine and is an indicator that nicotine has been inhaled or otherwise introduced into the body.
