Terminal Illness Cover and Accidental Death Benefit

All of Legal & General’s life insurance policies come with Terminal Illness Cover and Accidental Death Benefit as standard, offering additional protection at no extra cost to you.

Terminal Illness Cover

Terminal illness cover is automatically included at no extra cost on Legal & General life assurance policies. It means that your policy could pay out the proceeds of your policy upon diagnosis of a terminal illness, rather than when you die, during the policy term. Terminal illness is also one of the 39 illnesses covered under the critical illness cover that you can add to any life insurance policy.

  • By terminal, it means: 'suffering from an advanced or rapidly progressing incurable illness where, in the opinion of a Medical Officer of Legal & General, your life expectancy is less than 12 months'.
  • You'll need to be eligible to claim so, for example, if you've stopped paying your premiums, your policy may not pay out.
  • This cover is not available during the last 18 months of your policy and is only available on plans with a term of at least two years.
  • Once a terminal illness claim has been accepted, no further claims can be made. No premiums will be payable either and the policy will end.
  • If, after a terminal illness claim has been accepted, you survive to the end of the term; you will not have to pay back the terminal illness payment received. However, once the payment has been received, the plan will end and no further claims can be made.

Accidental Death Benefit

Sometimes, when you apply for a life insurance policy Legal & General may be unable to give you an immediate decision. They may need to write to you or your doctor for more information.
Legal & General appreciate that you may still wish to have some protection, so during this time you are provided with free accidental death benefit whilst your application is processed. This cover is provided without the need for any underwriting – giving you some peace of mind that you’re covered in case of an accident.

Things you need to know

  • The amount of accidental death benefit will be the amount you applied for or £300,000, whichever is lower.
  • The cover will start when a completed application form is that you submit online or over the telephone is received.
  • Cover will last for 90 days or until Legal & General accept, postpone or decline your application or you notify Legal & General that you no longer wish to proceed, whichever is earliest.
  • Accidental death benefit pays out a cash sum if you die within 90 days of an accident. In this instance our definition of an accident is where a bodily injury is sustained, caused by an accidental violent, external and visible means, which solely and independently of any other cause results in death.
