Important information:
Life insurance could pay out a lump sum if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness.
- Your monthly premiums depend on the lump sum you choose at the start of the policy.
- Premiums are paid monthly or annually. Annual premiums will be cheaper.
- Cover can last from 1 to 40 years for level cover and 5 to 40 years for decreasing cover. The policy must end before your 80th birthday.
- For Level term insurance, the cover remains the same throughout the term of the policy.
- For Mortgage decreasing term insurance, the cover reduces roughly in line with the outstanding amount on a repayment mortgage and the product is only suitable for you if you have a repayment mortgage.
- For Mortgage decreasing term insurance there are some circumstances when the lump sum payment might not be enough to pay off your mortgage in full. For example, if your mortgage interest rate averages over 10% during the policy term
If you choose to add critical illness cover to your life insurance policy for an additional cost, the policy will pay out on death or on diagnosis of a specified critical illness.
- Cover can last from 2 to 40 years for level cover and 5 to 40 years for decreasing cover and must end by age 70.
- Legal & General provide cover for 39 critical illnesses, 11 of which exceed the Association of British Insurers’ model definitions. The Guide to Critical Illness Cover PDF will explain what you are and are not covered for in detail.
- The policy will provide a lump sum if you were to die, or be diagnosed with one of the 39 critical illnesses and eligible to claim within the policy term.
- The 39 illnesses include cancer, heart attack and stroke, however due to advances in medicine, not every type of cancer will have a severe impact on your lifestyle if discovered and treated early enough. For example, a cancer needs to have spread or reached a specified severity to be covered. Similarly heart attacks that cause tissue damage are covered, but angina, which is a different type of illness, is not. Finally a stroke that results in permanent symptoms is covered but if you only suffer temporary symptoms that disappear in a few days, that condition is not.
- You can choose between guaranteed or reviewable premiums. If you choose reviewable premiums, these are reviewed every five years and could increase or decrease. More detailed information can be found in the Key Features Document PDF.
If you choose to add waiver of premium to your life insurance policy for an additional cost, the requirement to pay your premiums will be waived if you are unable to work due to incapacity caused by illness or injury.
- In order to claim, you must pay your premiums for the first 26 weeks of incapacity. Premiums are then waived if you’re unable to work because of the incapacity.
- If you’re not working before the onset of incapacity, your premiums will only be waived after 26 weeks if you can’t perform three or more functional assessment tests.
General risks:
- By providing your telephone number on the 'personal details' page you are consenting to Legal & General contacting you by telephone in relation to your life assurance application. Do not provide your telephone number if you do not want to be contacted. If you do not proceed for any reason during the application process, your information may still be processed to facilitate the above phone call.
- If you stop paying your premiums your cover will end 30 days after the first missed premium. The policy has no cash-in value at any time.
- The policy will only pay out the full lump sum once.
- Some benefits may be excluded in your individual policy’s conditions following the underwriting assessment of your application. If so, these exclusions will be included in your policy schedule and policy terms and conditions and Legal & General won’t pay claims in those circumstances.
- If you don’t provide truthful and accurate information your policy may not pay out, and it might have to be cancelled. Don’t assume that Legal & General will write to your doctor, it’s your responsibility to fill in the application form accurately.
- Between completing your application and when your policy starts, you must inform Legal & General where any changes occur to the following information: medical disclosures, family history, occupation, travel or residence (except holidays), pastimes, alcohol consumption, start smoking, use of recreational drugs.
- Your policy will not pay out if you commit suicide in the first 12 months of cover.
