Acute Not necessarily severe, but of short duration; not chronic
Benign Non-cancerous; non-life threatening condition
Biopsy Removal of tissue sample for examination
Chronic Persisting or recurring over a long period of time
Congenital Condition from birth
Diagnosis The identification and naming of a medical condition
Exacerbation An increase in the severity of symptoms
Excision Removal by cutting
Genetic Hereditary
Hereditary Transmission of a genetic material from parent to child
Idiopathic Without known cause
Infarction Tissues killed and damaged by ischaemic changes
Ischaemic Diminished supply of blood to a part of the body
Labile Unstable
Malignant Cancerous
Metastasis Distant spread of a malignant tumour from its site of origin
Obesity A weight of more than 20% above the normal range
Organ A structural unit of the body that performs a specific function(s)
Paroxysm Sudden temporary attack
Prognosis The probable outcome of the disease
Prosthesis Artificial limb or organ
Quiescent Not active
Relapse The return of the disease after its apparent resolution
Remission The period of abatement of a disease
Sclerosis Hardening and/or scarring
Systemic Affecting the whole body
Tumour A lump or swelling which may be benign or malignant
