Family History

Introduction

A family history of disease or death at a premature age may be an adverse risk factor

Family history is taken into account for all types of cover assessed, and is particularly relevant to Critical Illness Cover (CIC)

People who inherit a known cancer gene will not definitely get cancer; they do however have an increased risk of developing cancer when compared to the wider population

Underwriting Considerations

  • Number of relatives affected
  • Relationship of the relative to the applicant
  • Age at occurrence in the relative
  • Current age and sex of the applicant and relatives – a very young applicant’s parents may be young themselves and could suffer an inherited disease in the future

Conditions that occur more frequently in some families and may affect our underwriting decision:

  • Ischaemic Heart Disease; e.g. heart attack, angina, coronary artery disease
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Cancer; e.g. breast, colorectal, ovarian
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
  • Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP)
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
