HMRC launches tax guide for dentists.

04 March 2013

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has developed an online tax guide specifically designed for people practising dentistry.

The Tax for Dentists guide gives an overview of tax, National Insurance contributions and VAT and offers tips and advice on topics like employing staff as well as featuring a section to help newly-qualified dentists.

It should take somewhere in the region of an hour or two to go through the guidance but Mike Purvis from HMRC says the information is easy to digest and people do not have to read it all at once and can revisit it whenever they want.

"The e-learning tutorial is available online so that dentists can read it in their own time, when it is convenient. It's in small sections, so doesn't need to be read all at once," he said.

"Dentists can read as little or as much as they like, and return to it as often as they need to, whenever it suits them."

An HMRC disclosure opportunity for dentists and doctors has resulted in more than 1,500 medical professionals paying in excess of £10 million in unpaid tax and penalties voluntarily, and one dentist even paid over £300,000.
