Summer tips for your home

Here's some top tips to make sure you stay green, save energy and keep your home safe this summer.

Be green and save energy this summer:

  • Adjust your heating thermostat or turn off the heating during the warmer months
  • Keep your house cool - keep the blinds or shades closed on the sunny side of your house
  • Adjust any outdoor lighting timers to accommodate for the lighter nights
  • Switch to halogen lamps and light bulbs where possible
  • Dry your clothes on a washing line outside and not in the tumble dryer

Keep your garden beautiful but stay green:

  • Don't burn your garden waste – take it to the local tip, put it in the compost or in green refuse bags for the council to collect
  • Try not to use water sprinklers; if you must use sprinklers then use them in the morning or evening when it’s cooler as this will be more effective

Enjoy al-fresco cooking but keep safe:

  • Make sure your barbeque is cleaned before use, a dirty barbeque could be a fire risk
  • Situate barbeques away from the house, wooden furniture and fences
  • When barbequing keep a fire extinguisher close by just in case

If you're going on holiday this summer, help keep your house safe and sound:

  • Cancel the milk and newspapers if you get them delivered
  • Make sure that all doors and windows are securely locked
  • Set any timers you have for lights, radios and other appliances
  • Make sure your garage has a visible lock
  • Remember to lock away any ladders
  • If you don't have one fitted, consider installing a burglar alarm before you go away
  • Give a spare key to a trusted friend or neighbour and ask them to keep a watchful eye on your home while you're away

Finally, have a great time this summer!
