'Savings struggle' for UK adults.

13/02/2012

Savers aged between 35 and 44 were hit hardest by the country's tough economic climate last year.

That is according to research from Opinion Matters which shows that, overall, seven in 10 Britons took steps to increase their savings pots in 2011.

The average amount of savings and investments accrued stood at £17,875.

However, the study indicated that the lowest levels of savings were recorded within the 35 to 44 age group. Savings of just £9,087 were typically held by people in this age category during 2011.

While 31% of their gross annual household income was saved in 2010, this fell to 21% last year.

Savers have been impacted by a range of economic pressures in recent times, with high inflation and weak interest rates among them.

The study suggested that almost half of UK adults made up the "squeezed middle" last year, with the tough financial climate affecting their saving plans.
