Shop price inflation has hit a two-year low and given retailers a timely trade boost.
The Office for National Statistics revealed that as a result of January sales driving down inflation, retail sales volumes rose by 0.9% between December and last month.
This sales hike defied expectations of a 0.4% fall.
Prices in shops during January were 2.2% higher than a year ago, according to the figures, which is the lowest increase since November 2009.
In every sector, apart from clothes stores, there was a slower rate of price rises than during the previous month.
This meant shoppers enjoyed falling inflationary pressure at the same time retailers introduced drastic discounts as part of attempts to entice consumers.
Despite these positive trends, there are still fears for high streets because most of the growth has been stimulated by online shopping and other outlets.
