Legal & General Group enhances its Code of Ethics explicitly on Human Rights and Corruption & Bribery
In June 2008, Legal & General and EIRiS (Ethical Investment Research Services) met to discuss our recently announced ventures in Mumbai and Bahrain to see how we should support these commercial ventures with an enhanced Groupwide Code of Ethics. This has been reviewed by our Business Ethics Working Group, chaired by Diana Miller, Group Compliance Director. (See Corporate Governance Structure) We now explicitly cover the two key areas of Human Rights and Bribery & Corruption, which apply to both our direct operations as well as standards of other organisations we interact with, in line with the United Nations' Declaration on Human Rights (UNDHR). The new Groupwide Code of Ethics is an internal document which outlines our standards and expectations to our staff and others who act on behalf of the Legal & General Group. Welcome to Legal & General Group’s 2007 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report.

Legal & General is in the fortunate position of not only having direct control over its social and environmental impact through its CSR programme but also extending the setting of high standards of operation in others, as a result of its Investments, its Supply Chain and its Property Management influence. L&G’s CSR programme includes the following areas at its core:
  • A company that holds almost 5% of the FTSE on behalf of its clients and influences other companies to act sustainably through its corporate governance programme.
  • A company that, as one of the biggest property fund managers in the UK, has sustainable property development practices at its core.
  • A company that was the first financial services company to achieve ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system.
  • A company that is a founding member and signatory of the ABI's Climatewise programme.
  • A company that, through its employees’ efforts, donated £2.4m to the communities in which it operates.
  • A company that has a 90% rating from Business in the Community for its Social Supplier programme.
