Build

Build is an important factor in underwriting customers that buy life cover, critical illness and income protection.

We convert a customer's height and weight into a body mass index (BMI). BMI is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used in classifying overweight and obesity in adults.

Depending on your customer's BMI , we may also ask them for their trouser, dress or skirt size, which may incur an additional premium in it's own right.

Here is a link to a BMI calculator.

BMI is calculated by taking weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (Kg/m2).

What is a Healthy BMI?

These are the weight ranges set by the World Health Organisation (WHO):

  • BMI less than 18.5: underweight
  • BMI between 18.5 and 24.9: Ideal weight for height
  • BMI between 25 and 29.9: over the ideal weight for your height
  • BMI between 30 and 39: Obese
  • BMI 40 or over: very obese

Impact of BMI and waist on health

Overweight, obesity and a large waist measurement can have an impact on health. Below are some associated health risks:

  • Type 2 (Adult Onset) Diabetes Mellitus.
  • Heart Disease; eg angina, heart attack, coronary artery disease.
  • Stroke.
  • Raised blood pressure.
  • Cancers - colon, kidney, endometrial and post menopausal breast cancer.

Potential premium increases for BMI

Below is a guide as to how your customer's premium may increase due to BMI. It assumes there are no health conditions present.

Please note - The guidance below does not include any possible premium increase for trouser, dress or skirt size.
