About Group Critical Illness cover

Our Group Critical Illness Cover is designed to pay out a tax-free lump sum if an insured employee is diagnosed with a specified critical illness or condition and survives for 14 days. Giving employees living with the consequences of critical illness and surgery some often much needed financial breathing space.

In addition to financial support, our cover also provides access to specialist advice every step of the way, providing practical, emotional and medical support whenever it’s required.

Why Legal & General

Our Group Critical Illness Cover has been built to be as comprehensive as possible, with all of our valuable product features and services as standard. We wanted to remove the need for optional added cost bolt-ons, so you can be confident your clients are fully supported.

  • Extensive conditions covered – cover up to 41 conditions with 15 as standard and a further 26 can be added at an additional cost.
  • Children’s cover – as standard from birth to 21 years of age for eligible children, for all conditions of insured employee. There’s a further six child only conditions included at no extra cost.
  • Cancer cover – second and subsequent cancer diagnoses as standard.
  • Added support in partnership with MEDIGO – Second Medical Opinion, Nurse Support Service and Medical Concierge, all at no extra cost.
  • Easy to set up - most employees can be insured without the need for lengthy medical underwriting. We do this by applying a pre-existing and related condition exclusion.
  • Quick payment – Claims normally paid within five days, once we’ve received the information we need. Average pay-out in 2019, £63,306.

1. Second Opinion

The Second Opinion service provides insured employees and their immediate families with access to a global network of medical specialists. The specialist will offer second opinions on diagnoses and treatments for almost any condition, allowing the insured to understand the potential impact of their condition and evaluate the most appropriate clinical pathway for their needs. Second Opinion helps to:

  • Avoid unnecessary treatments
  • Improve treatment outcomes
  • Provide peace of mind
  • Empower individuals to make informed choices on their healthcare

Typical specialities covered are Oncology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Gynaecology, and Paediatrics.

A MEDIGO Second Opinion offers a complete written evaluation of a patient’s medical history and diagnosis based on their available medical reports; diagnostic imaging, test results, etc.

A specialist doctor (or a team of specialist doctors) from a leading medical institution with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of the specific disease will either confirm the diagnosis and/or treatment plan or recommend a different diagnosis and/or alternative treatment plan(s) based on the latest advances in modern medicine and global standards of treatment for your condition.

To access the Second Medical Opinion service, employees can call 020 3871 8760 or by registering online by visiting our portal page.

2. Nurse Support Service

The nurse support service provides eligible claimants with telephone and messaging support from registered nurses. The nurses provide on-going care every step of the way during the insured’s illness.

No question is too big or too small. The nurse team can help the insured with many issues:

  • Have they been given a diagnosis that they’d like to talk through?
  • Have they been given some results and they feel unclear about what they mean?
  • Have they booked a two-night break away and realised they have left their medication at home?
  • Do they need practical support finding medical equipment or accessories to aid their recovery or help them cope with their condition?

The service is provided by fully-qualified, experienced nurses: registered and regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (MNC) who undertake regular CPD and Revalidations.

The Nurse Support Service becomes available after a Group Critical Illness claim is approved. Our Benefits Team will provide access details with the claim acceptance notification.

3. Medical Concierge

Medical Concierge is a global treatment sourcing solution. The service allows the insured to focus on their specific treatment and medical requirements whilst the MEDIGO Case Manager does all the liaising and coordination to deliver the treatment plan.

The Medical Concierge service will;

  • Review the insured’s proposed treatment plan and supporting medical documents
  • Interview them to determine the desired treatment options, preferred location of treatment (UK or abroad), and treatment budget
  • Search and present up to three quotations for treatment
  • Book the treatment with the chosen provider (UK or abroad)
  • Provide telephone support throughout the period of treatment
  • Support with arrangements including flights, ground transport, accommodation, and interpreter services if needed
  • Provide assistance with visa applications if needed

The service is available for most conditions’ exclusions may apply for certain high risk and cosmetic procedures.

The insured is liable for all payments for treatment and associated travel and logistics costs.

By accessing treatment through the MEDIGO network of over 1,100 hospitals in 35 countries (across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific), this can help provide assurance of quality and a fair price which in most cases will be better than the prices available on a direct basis. This is largely thanks to preferential commercial terms negotiated by MEDIGO with its providers, as well as rigorous cost containment process that ensures fair pricing and billing in accordance with local regulations.

Medical Concierge can be accessed by calling 020 3871 8760 or by registering  online by visiting our portal page.
