What is Boiler Cover?

It’s an unwritten law that boilers break down at the worst possible times. Usually when it starts getting colder and typically when we need it most. At those moments we start to remember the maintenance we could have done or the service we should have booked in. Fortunately, for those who have our Home Emergency Cover, all that needs remembering is the number of our 24-hour emergency helpline.

Help when you need it

When it comes to your boiler, our Home Emergency Cover comes as standard with our Gold and Silver Home Insurance.

It covers:

  • The failure of your domestic hot water system
  • The total failure of your central heating system between the months of September and April inclusive
  • Up to £1,000 (including VAT) towards the call-out charges, labour, parts and materials for immediate repairs to stabilise and remove the emergency.


We’re not able to pay if:

  • There are air locks in the central heating piping
  • Central heating or room thermostats are malfunctioning
  • The failure occurs between the months of May and August inclusive
  • The central heating pump fails
  • The zone or changeover valves fail
  • The boiler has an output that exceeds 170,000 BTU capacity
  • The boiler and any warm air unit are older than eight years
  • Repair or reinstatement is not possible due to non-availability of parts

As well as your boiler being protected, you’ll also benefit from cover for:

Plumbing emergencies
Burst pipes due to events like winter freezes – something that becomes apparent when the ice thaws and you realise you have no water. Sudden leakages, blocked drains, or broken cisterns can also cause major headaches requiring attention.

Security emergencies
Break in or vandalism, causing damage like smashed windows or broken locks that can compromise the security of your home.

Supply failure
The breakdown of your water supply, gas supply or electrical system leaving your home without these services.

Storm damage
If, for example, strong winds blew tiles off your roof, Home Emergency Cover could find a contractor to put a tarpaulin over the area of missing tiles to prevent further water from seeping through, until a permanent repair could be made.

Sudden damage
The kind that either allows water to enter your home, or compromises the security of your property. It can be caused by subsidence or heave or landslip which breaks external windows, doors or their frames.

Maintenance tips

Even with your boiler covered by our Home Emergency Cover, there are a number of things you can do to keep your boiler in good shape when it’s not in use. Some of the big ones include:

  • Switching off
    As soon as the weather starts to warm up, you might want to turn your central heating off and drain the system. Not only will you be giving it a well-earned rest but you’ll save money.
  • Testing
    Turn the heating on for 15-30 minutes every month or so to ensure things are working okay and catch any problems before winter rolls around.
  • Regular servicing
    Once a year, use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer to carry out a proper service to make sure the boiler is safe and performing well. They can also test the pressure, inspect your radiators and check if your pipes need lagging.
