Smart Protection for your Home: Making Smart Tech even Smarter
Find out how Smart Tech can help you protect your home, including IFTTT apps and motion detection cameras.
What once seemed something you’d only see in the realms of science fiction is now becoming everyday technology in your home, keeping it, your possessions and your family safe. To show how it can help protect against common causes of Home Insurance claims, we asked Suzi Perry, presenter of the Gadget Show for eight years, to try out some of the newest products in the Unruly House of the Future, Now, a London showcase for the latest in domestic tech.
In our video at the top of the page, Suzi demonstrates ways you can connect up your smart devices to protect your home and make your life a little easier.
Making smart tech work for you
New ways of protecting your home have been made possible by an app called IFTTT – it’s an easy way to get all your other apps and devices working together. Simply put, it stands for ‘If This, Then That’, and that means you can set up a chain of events, from just a few taps on your phone.
For example, you may put your dinner in the oven, set the timer, then move to the living room to relax while your dinner cooks. The trouble is, you may not hear the alarm. Luckily, with IFTTT, you can easily set up your living room lights to flash on and off when the alarm goes off. That’s what makes this app so useful – you can arrange your smart home tech around the way you and your family lead your lives.

Another smart gadget we’ve seen recently is a motion detector camera that can sense when someone approaches your house. It’s sophisticated enough to distinguish between body shapes, so if it’s a cat, or a fox, then an alert won’t be triggered. If it’s a person, the camera can take a picture. Then, thanks to IFTTT, the picture is sent to your phone, so you can quickly see if it’s someone you recognise – or someone you don’t.
And remember, at Legal & General we have our very own smart piece of tech – SmartQuote, which gives you a Home insurance quote in just five easy questions. Get a quote
