Critical Illness Cover could pay out a cash sum if you are diagnosed with one of the specified critical illnesses we cover during the length of your policy, such as heart attack, cancer or stroke. However, some types of cancer are not included and to make a claim for some illnesses, you need to have permanent symptoms.
“When you become a father you see life in a different way”.
Says Leighton Morris, a father and self-employed photographer based in South Wales.
Leighton was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2011, but thanks to a critical illness policy he had taken out with Legal & General, he was able to cope financially when he had to take several months off work for treatment. It made a big difference to his wife and three year old son to have that financial help while he couldn’t work.
He was very glad that he had taken out insurance cover because he was able to pay off a large part of his mortgage, clear his debt, invest in his business and put some money into an emergency savings fund.
“In the early part of 2011 I was going downhill health wise. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, which everyone else thinks argh but for myself it was a massive weight off my shoulders because I had just got to a point where I couldn’t carry on”.
When he had renewed the mortgage 18 months earlier he and his wife had sat down and sorted out insurance.
“Having a young family I thought we needed to get the Insurance sorted out, so we sat down and went through all the different policies available for myself”.
“I felt that the cover needed to be there just in case something which you don’t have planned does come about”.
Although it was a difficult time, he had to have an operation, he was thankful that the policy paid out so that he and his family had financial help while he was in hospital recovering.
He was very impressed by the smooth claims process and how Legal & General made the whole experience much better.
Legal & General kept in contact with him regularly and made sure he was updated on the process of the claim.
“I had one lady that was that point of call, and every time it was her that spoke to me”.
Leighton was really glad that he had taken the time to review his insurance when his son was born.
“I always put Insurance there, but it would always be the minimum. But when you become a father you sort of see life in a little bit of a different way”.
“Compared to insurance policies I already had with different providers the policy from Legal & General was very competitive and worthwhile in doing”.
