Whether you’re still living at home or moving into a place of your own, planning for the long-term may not always be high on the agenda.

You’ll find yourself with a busy social life to fund and potentially a lot of outgoings to pay for, especially if you’re buying your own home.

However, with big plans for the future, there’s plenty to be thinking about and save for.

Key events

  • Mortgage or moving house. The biggest financial commitment of many people’s lives, you’ll want to balance your spending with the need to save for the future. There’s also the cost of moving to consider.
  • Marriage or registered civil partnership. The big day can be a major expense, but it’s the plans you’ll subsequently make together that count most for the future.
  • Parenthood. Think about how to provide for and protect your family.
  • Redundancy. If you lose your job, you’ll need savings to tide you over until you find a new employer. You may also have a redundancy payment you can invest.
