Building Future You

Your pension can be a bit of a forgotten friend. We want Building Future You to reintroduce you to it, to help you achieve your ideal retirement lifestyle.

You probably save some money into your pension every month – and maybe your employer chips in too. But chances are you don’t think about it much beyond that. When we asked UK people aged 40+ about their pensions, we found that:

  • Two in five of them haven’t reviewed their pension in the past year.
  • One in four can’t estimate how much they’ve saved into their pension.
  • Almost a third have never even looked for pension information or advice.

That’s a big challenge. And it’s very important to do something about it, because about five million aren’t currently on track to cover their retirement costs. That figure goes up to nine million when you look at people aged 25 to 54.1

So if your pension is more of an old, slightly forgotten acquaintance than a close friend you see a lot of, you’re not alone. But it’s worth getting to know it again, because a little pension management right now can make a big difference when you finally retire.

That’s why we’ve launched Building Future You. It’s designed to see if relevant and timely education via the workplace will help solve the problem of people not saving enough for their ideal retirement.

Building Future You right now…

You can jump straight in by taking our quick, simple Building Future You quiz. It will help you think through:

  • what sort of saver you are
  • where you are on your savings journey
  • how you can save more effectively

… can make a real difference later on

Making changes to how you save now can have a real impact on your retirement income. That’s true whatever your current age and financial position.

If you’re just starting out

Thinking about how much money you might need in 30, 40 or even 50 years won’t feel like a priority. But the sooner you start saving, the more time your money has to grow and the easier it is to ride out any stock market ups and downs.

You don’t need to do any complicated or detailed planning – just get into the habit of:

  • putting some cash away every month
  • checking in on it every so often to see how it’s doing

If you’re in mid-career or beyond

It’s worth thinking about your ideal later life style so you can make sure you’re saving enough to cover it. If you find you’re not saving enough, you’ve still got time in hand to do something about it.

Again, you don’t need to do anything too complicated – just make sure you:

  • have a clear sense of your ideal retirement income
  • make sure you’re on track to save enough to cover it

Whatever life stage you’re at

Maybe you’re in your early 20s and just opening your first pension. Or perhaps you already have decades of workplace experience behind you. When it comes to saving for retirement, there are a few things worth knowing:

  • pensions are a very tax-efficient way of saving for the long term
  • your employer might match your contributions – that’s free money!
