Our research found that one in four couples in the UK are in a ‘financial situationship’ - partners who share their lives, but not the details of their money.
That’s 8.7 million people guessing about each other’s spending, savings and financial future.
How well do couples really know each other’s finances?
Most people know their partner's income (78%). They know their partner's savings (68%). They also know monthly essential costs each month. (75%).
Long-term money matters are less clear. Over one-third (36%) do not know their partner's pension savings. Many are unsure about unsecured debt (24%). Others lack knowledge about investments (26%).
Most couples (86%) believe they communicate well about money. Yet, nearly one in five (18%) argue about it. Another 17% avoid the conversation entirely.
Talking openly about money helps you make better future decisions. It prevents surprises. It also helps you set shared financial goals.
