No one should have to worry about the financial impact of ill health, and that includes if you’ve been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). As we’ll explore, having life insurance in place can alleviate some of these concerns.
Yes, it’s possible to get life insurance if you have multiple sclerosis. However, the information you provide during your life insurance application will determine whether you can get cover. You may also be asked to provide some medical evidence before a decision on your application is made.
More than 150,000 people in the UK have multiple sclerosis, so if you’re looking for life insurance with MS, you’re not alone.
MS is classed as a pre-existing condition when you apply for life insurance, so how would this affect your application?

The future is never certain, but if you’re looking for extra peace of mind, Critical Illness Cover can protect you financially if you are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the future.
When you take out L&G Life Insurance or Decreasing Life Insurance, you can add Critical Illness Cover to your policy for an extra cost. It pays out the amount of cover if you're diagnosed with a condition or undergo a medical procedure which meets our definition, and you survive for 14 days from diagnosis.
If you take out Critical Illness Cover, MS is one of the conditions covered, but there are important details to note if you need to make a claim:
- You will need to have received a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis by a consultant neurologist.
- You will need to have symptoms of multiple sclerosis; for example, the MS must had led to a clinical impairment of motor or sensory function.
- Your Critical Illness policy will need to be active at the time of a diagnosis in order for any payout to be made.
- Following the policy start date, there is no ‘waiting period’ before a Critical Illness claim can be made, but as we’ve covered, you will need to survive for 14 days following a diagnosis.
Following a valid claim, a ‘Critical Illness’ payout for MS is typically paid within 10 working days of L&G confirming the claim in writing.
L&G Life Insurance policies are designed to pay out upon death, rather than the diagnosis of a condition like multiple sclerosis.
So if you were to pass away with Life Insurance in place, your loved ones would be able to make a claim by notifying L&G. We would then assess the evidence provided, such as a death certificate, before paying any payout to the legal policy owner.
We understand the financial stress many families are under – especially during a cost of living crisis.
L&G Life Insurance is available from £5 a month, but what really counts is that premiums are fixed when you take out a policy. Often, this means that life insurance is cheaper when you’re younger. This is particularly important with regards to multiple sclerosis, which sadly, is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults. So if you have others that depend on you financially, it could be worth considering life insurance.
So if you have life insurance in place already, your premiums will be unaffected by an MS diagnosis. And if you have MS and you’re applying for life insurance, the cost of any policy offered would be influenced not only by your condition, but factors like your age, smoker status and family medical history.
