Financial Situationships

Are you in a Financial Situationship?

Are you and your partner managing life together but keeping your finances separate? You are not alone.

Our research found that one in four couples in the UK are in a ‘financial situationship’ - partners who share their lives, but not the details of their money.
That’s 8.7 million people guessing about each other’s spending, savings and financial future.

How well do couples really know each other’s finances?

A lot of people know what their partner makes (78%), what they’ve saved (68%), and how much they pay for essentials each month (75%).

But when it comes to long-term money matters, things get less clear. 36% don’t really know about their partner’s pension savings, 24% are unsure about unsecured debt, and 26% lack knowledge of investments.

Even though 86% of couples think they communicate well about money, nearly one in five (18%) admit to arguments about it—and 17% avoid the conversation altogether.
Opening up about money can help you and your partner make better decisions for your future, avoid surprises, and set shared goals.
