Life insurance - Accidental Death Benefit

Accidental Death Benefit

When you apply for Life Insurance or Decreasing Life Insurance, we may sometimes need more information before we can make a decision on your application.

While your application is being processed, you’ll get Accidental Death Benefit at no extra cost. This provides temporary protection if you die as a result of an accident, giving you some reassurance while you wait for a decision on your application.

We don't provide this benefit if you have told us that your application is to replace an existing policy with us, while you remain covered under the existing policy.

Getting a Life Insurance quote is quick and easy.

Already have a policy?

Log in or register for My Account to manage your Life Insurance policy.

Accidental Death Benefit provides cover during your application while we complete the underwriting process. Your cover starts when we receive your completed application, submitted online or over the telephone.

The maximum amount we could pay is the amount of cover you've applied for across all applications, or £300,000, whichever is lower.

Your Accidental Death Benefit will last for up to 90 days. It will end earlier if:

  • we accept your application
  • we postpone or decline your application
  • you tell us you no longer want to proceed with your application.

Accidental Death Benefit pays a cash sum if you die within 90 days of an accident.

For this benefit, an accident means a bodily injury caused by accidental, violent, external and visible means, which solely and independently of any other cause results in death.

If you've told us that your application is replacing an existing policy with us, we won't provide Accidental Death Benefit while you remain covered by your existing policy.

Accidental Death Benefit won't be paid if death results from:

  • suicide, intentional and serious self-injury or an event where, in our reasonable opinion, you took your own life

  • taking part or attempting to take part in a dangerous sport or pastime

  • taking part or attempting to take part in an aerial flight other than as a fare-paying passenger on a licensed airline

  • committing, attempting or provoking an assault or criminal offence

  • war, whether declared or not, riot or civil commotion

  • taking alcohol or drugs, unless the drugs were prescribed by a registered doctor in the United Kingdom

  • an accident that happened before your application.
