Residency and travel

UK residency and travel history

Current, future and past residency and travel are important risk factors that we take into consideration when underwriting your client’s policy application.

Residence or travel outside the United Kingdom can involve an increased risk. For example, clients may travel to war zones, politically unstable areas or areas with health-related risks.

Residency and travel

On the declaration page of the application form, your client signs to state they are a UK resident.

For your client to be classed as a UK resident, they must:

  • Be currently living in the UK
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 183 days in the last tax year

Tax rules and legislation restrict who we can offer cover to outside the UK. We abide by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) regulation and the European Union's Third Life Directive.

We may need medical evidence from clients who have arrived in the UK or travelled for a long period outside the UK within the past five years.

A request for evidence will depend on:

  • The duration of their stay
  • When they arrived back in the UK
  • The countries they travelled to

We will consider clients who are:

  • A permanent resident in the UK (excluding Channel Islands and the Isle of Man)
  • Temporarily travelling within the European Union (EU), United States of America (USA), Canada, Australia and New Zealand
  • Temporarily travelling to countries not listed above on an individual consideration basis
  • Planning a permanent move abroad, whilst they remain in the UK
  • Crown Employees or in the Merchant Navy

We will consider life-only cover for applicants who will definitely be moving abroad, as long as the move is not within three months of the application and providing they are staying within:

  • European Union (EU)
  • United States of America (USA)
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
