Find your lost and old pensions

We offer a free pension tracing service to our Legal & General customers. We’ll need you to tell us what you can about your old pension plans or previous employers, some basic personal information to register. Then we’ll get to work tracing your pensions for you and keep you updated on our progress.

Providing us with details of your previous employers lets us run checks on whether you have a pension in place through that company. Your pension is held separately to the company, so even if they don’t exist anymore we should be able to find any associated pension.

You can use the Government's Pension Tracing Service and contact your previous employers and pension providers yourself. This can be time-consuming, especially if you have a number of previous jobs.

To help us find your lost pensions, you need the name of the company you worked for and when you worked there, or the pension provider that administered your company scheme. It doesn’t matter whether the company is still trading under that name or even if it’s still in business. It should still be on the database. You may also be asked for the nature of the company’s business and your job role.

Once we have the details of your previous jobs and pension schemes,  and you’ve confirmed you want to proceed, the tracing service normally takes about 4 to 16 weeks.

Throughout the tracing process, you can check progress online by logging in to your dashboard.

Your pension savings should be held separately from the company finances.

If it’s a final salary scheme (Defined Benefit), you may not get 100% of the benefits you were entitled to. However, the Pension Protection Fund was set up by the government to protect the final salary pensions of people who worked for companies that no longer exist. It can pay 90% of your benefits if you’re below retirement age or 100% if you’re over retirement age (though there is a cap for higher earners).
